Runners to be given prize money after being led off course

Three athletes were led off course during the US half marathon championship in Atlanta due to a police emergency that caused confusion with the lead vehicle. Jess McClain, who was leading the women’s race, along with Ednah Kurgat and Emma Hurley, were mistakenly taken off the main route. As a result, Molly Born, who was trailing by over a minute, won the race. McClain finished ninth, Hurley 12th, and Kurgat 13th. The Atlanta Track Club has decided to compensate the athletes by awarding McClain the first-place prize money, while Hurley and Kurgat will share the second and third-place winnings. The incident occurred because police officers assigned to the race had to respond to an emergency, and their replacements were unfamiliar with the course. Despite an appeal, USA Track & Field (USATF) did not change the results, although they acknowledged the course was poorly marked. The race was a qualifier for the World Road Running Championships, but selections are still open. QUESTION: How might the experience of being led off course in a major race impact an athlete’s confidence and future performance?
