Ex-wife told 911 the synagogue attacker was “not stable” ahead of incident

A tragic incident occurred at Michigan’s Temple Israel when Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, reportedly unstable and suicidal, drove his truck into the synagogue’s entrance, injuring a security officer. Ghazali, a Lebanese-born U.S. citizen, had recently lost two brothers in an airstrike in Lebanon, which may have contributed to his distress. Before the attack, his ex-wife, Fatima, alerted authorities about his mental state. The FBI labeled the event a targeted attack against the Jewish community. Ghazali died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a confrontation with security officers. Fortunately, all students and staff at the synagogue were unharmed. The attack highlights the complex interplay of personal grief, mental health, and geopolitical tensions. QUESTION: How might communities better support individuals struggling with mental health issues to prevent such tragic events?
