Juliana Stratton wins Illinois Democratic primary for US Senate

Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has emerged as the predicted winner of the Democratic primary for the US Senate, defeating her main rival, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, with about 90% of the votes counted. Her victory marks a significant turnaround, as she had been trailing in the polls until a late surge of support, bolstered by an endorsement and $12 million from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. Stratton’s campaign focused on opposing Trump’s immigration policies, including a call to abolish ICE, which resonated with voters. Her win sets her up to replace retiring Senator Dick Durbin, who has served five terms. If elected in November, Stratton would become the sixth Black woman to serve in the Senate and join two other Black women, marking a historic moment. Voter turnout was notably high, reflecting the race’s significance. QUESTION: How might Juliana Stratton’s focus on immigration reform influence future political discussions and policies in the United States?
