Markwayne Mullin confirmation hearing set for today

Markwayne Mullin, a member of the Cherokee Nation and former MMA fighter, has been a U.S. Senator since 2023 after a decade in the House. Known for mediating between the Senate and House, Mullin is a strong ally of the president. He is on track to be confirmed as the new Secretary of Homeland Security, following the ouster of the previous secretary, Noem. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been shut down for over a month due to a funding impasse in Congress, primarily over immigration enforcement. This has led to staffing issues at airports, with TSA officers quitting or calling in sick. Democrats and Republicans have been unable to agree on funding, with Democrats demanding reforms after incidents involving federal agents. Mullin’s confirmation seems likely, with support from Republicans and potentially some Democrats, despite concerns about ICE’s deep-rooted issues. QUESTION: How might the ongoing shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security impact the daily lives of people across the country?
