NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover discovers even older lost rivers at Jezero Crater

NASA’s Perseverance rover has discovered evidence of ancient rivers beneath Mars’ Jezero Crater, suggesting the planet was once warmer and wetter. Using ground-penetrating radar, the rover found signs of a river-and-delta system that dates back 4.2 billion years, much older than previously studied surface features. This discovery extends the timeline of Mars’ habitability, indicating multiple periods when water flowed and possibly supported life. Jezero Crater, an ancient asteroid impact site, was chosen for exploration due to its rich fluvial features. The findings highlight Mars’ well-preserved geological history, unlike Earth’s, where similar-aged rocks have been altered over time. This research enhances our understanding of Mars’ past and its potential to have harbored life. QUESTION: How might discovering ancient rivers on Mars change our understanding of the planet’s history and its potential for supporting life?
