Family speaks after Afghan refugee who fought alongside U.S. forces dies in ICE custody

Mohammed Nazeer Paktiawal, a 41-year-old former Afghan soldier, died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 14. Paktiawal had been evacuated to the United States in 2021 following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. His death is part of a troubling trend, as 13 individuals have died in ICE detention within the first three months of 2026, following a record number of deaths the previous year. CBS News interviewed Paktiawal’s brother and 12-year-old son, who are seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding his unexpected death. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the conditions and oversight within ICE detention facilities, raising questions about the treatment of detainees and the adequacy of care provided to them. QUESTION: How might increased transparency and oversight in ICE detention facilities impact the well-being of detainees and public perception of immigration enforcement?
