Trump 24-karat gold coin approved by hand-picked federal panel

A 24-karat gold coin featuring the image of former U.S. President Donald Trump has been approved by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts to commemorate America’s 250th birthday on July 4th. The coin, which shows Trump with his fists on a desk, was presented by the U.S. Mint and approved unanimously, despite legal concerns about depicting a living president on currency. This decision was made under the authority of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who can issue proof gold coins. The commission’s vice-chairman suggested making the coin as large as three inches in diameter. Previously, Trump replaced the commission’s members with his allies. A proposed bill, the Trump Act, aimed to prevent presidents from appearing on currency, but it hasn’t passed. Until now, Calvin Coolidge was the only president featured on a coin during his lifetime. QUESTION: How might the decision to feature a living president on a commemorative coin influence public perception of currency and its historical significance?
