‘Unaffordable’ visa price hike threatens Australia’s researcher pipeline

University and postgraduate groups in Australia are urging the government to exempt PhD graduates from a sudden doubling of the visa fee for higher-education temporary graduate visas, known as subclass 485. The fee increased from Aus$2,300 to Aus$4,600, effective immediately, impacting international students who wish to stay in Australia post-graduation for further studies or work. The Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) argues that this hike threatens Australia’s ability to attract international research talent, as it represents a significant portion of a PhD student’s stipend. With international candidates comprising 40% of PhD enrolments in Australia, the increased fee could exacerbate existing challenges in recruiting research talent, such as limited funding and spending caps. This fee hike is part of broader immigration reforms aimed at addressing systemic issues. QUESTION: How might the increased visa fees influence the future of international research collaboration in Australia?
