2 skiers killed, 5 hurt in northern Italy avalanche

Two skiers lost their lives and five others were injured in an avalanche in the Italian Alps’ Trentino-Alto Adige region on Saturday. The avalanche struck near the town of Ratschings, close to the Austrian border, at an altitude of approximately 7,874 feet on the Hohe Ferse slopes. The mountain rescue service responded to an alert about a dozen skiers caught in the avalanche, deploying six helicopters and notifying nearby hospitals. Despite the presence of 25 skiers on the mountainside, most managed to avoid the worst of the snow, rocks, and ice slide. This incident follows a series of avalanches across Europe this winter, including recent fatalities in Austria and France. The avalanche risk in the region was assessed as low to moderate at the time. The ongoing series of avalanches highlights the dangers faced by skiers in the Alps this season. QUESTION: How might increased awareness and education about avalanche risks impact the safety of skiers in mountainous regions?
