Brazil’s Bolsonaro allowed to serve 27-year sentence at home due to ill health

Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro has been allowed to serve his 27-year sentence for attempting a coup at home due to health issues. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes granted him house arrest in a gated community in Brasilia, monitored by local police. Bolsonaro, 71, has been hospitalized for pneumonia and other health problems since March. He cannot use phones or communicate with others, except for doctors and family, for 90 days. If he breaks these rules, he could return to prison or a hospital. Bolsonaro’s health has been unstable since a 2018 stabbing incident. His family had requested house arrest since his conviction in November. Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a criminal organization and trying to overthrow democracy, charges he denies. His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, plans to run for president in October. QUESTION: How might the decision to allow Bolsonaro to serve his sentence at home instead of in prison impact public trust in Brazil’s justice system?
