Large blast at Valero oil refinery in Texas sends smoke, flames into the air

A large explosion occurred at the Valero oil refinery near the Texas Gulf Coast, sending smoke into the air and prompting some residents to shelter in place. Fortunately, Port Arthur Mayor Charlotte Moses confirmed there were no fatalities or injuries. Valero is actively working to contain the fire, and there are currently no air quality issues. The refinery, which processes heavy sour crude oil into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, employs about 770 people. The explosion comes amid rising gas prices due to global oil supply uncertainties linked to the Iran war. Residents were advised to stay indoors and limit outdoor activities until further notice. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is monitoring the situation. Port Arthur is located approximately 90 miles east of Houston. QUESTION: How might incidents like the Valero refinery explosion influence public perception of the oil industry and its impact on local communities?
