Houston airport wait times reach over four hours amid US travel chaos

Travelers in the U.S. are experiencing significant delays at airports due to a partial government shutdown, with Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport facing some of the longest wait times, exceeding four hours. This is largely because many Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents are missing work as they go unpaid, leading to a severe shortage of staff. In Houston, nearly 40% of TSA staff did not report for duty, causing the airport to operate at less than half its capacity. The situation is exacerbated by upcoming sporting events expected to increase passenger numbers. In response, the Trump administration has deployed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to assist at major airports, and President Trump has suggested the National Guard could be used if necessary. The shutdown stems from a funding dispute between Democrats and Republicans over immigration policies, with no resolution in sight. Meanwhile, offers to fund TSA salaries from private individuals like Elon Musk have been declined by the White House. QUESTION: How might the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on airport security influence public opinion about government funding and immigration policies?
