Nepal former prime minister and home minister arrested over protest deaths

Former Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli was arrested on March 28, 2026, over the deaths of dozens during violent protests in September that led to the government’s downfall and new elections. Oli, a leader of the Communist Party, was detained at his home near Kathmandu, along with former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, who allegedly ordered police to fire on protesters. The arrests followed the inauguration of a new government led by Balendra Shah, a rapper-turned-politician, whose party won a landslide victory. The interim government had previously recommended up to 10 years in prison for Oli and others involved. Oli’s arrest sparked protests from his supporters, who clashed with police. The protests last year, driven by young activists, resulted in 76 deaths and significant political change, including the appointment of Nepal’s first female prime minister, Sushila Karki. QUESTION: How might the arrest of former leaders for past actions influence the political climate and future governance in Nepal?
