Malnourished boy found locked in utility van since 2024, police say

A 9-year-old boy was rescued from a utility van in eastern France, where he had been locked since 2024. The local prosecutor reported that the child was found malnourished and unable to walk, lying naked on a pile of trash. His father, who was detained, claimed he locked the boy in the van to protect him from being sent to a psychiatric hospital by his partner. The boy, who had no prior psychiatric issues and performed well in school, described difficulties with his father’s partner and believed his father had no choice. He survived on food and water brought by his father and had not showered since 2024. The father’s partner denied knowing about the boy’s situation and was charged with failing to help a minor in danger. The boy’s sister and the partner’s daughter were placed in social services’ care. Authorities are investigating if others were aware of the boy’s confinement. QUESTION: How might this incident influence the way communities respond to signs of child neglect or abuse in the future?
