Following an election earthquake, Hungary ponders life after Orbán

Péter Magyar, Hungary’s newly elected leader, urged the president to quickly convene parliament to form a new government, aiming to replace Viktor Orbán as prime minister by May 5. With a strong mandate, Magyar plans to collaborate with European nations, restore the rule of law, and tackle corruption by restructuring government institutions. He intends to create new ministries for public health, environmental protection, and education. Although he called for peace, he did not specify his stance on Ukraine or relations with U.S. President Donald Trump. Magyar’s Tisza party won a super-majority, enabling significant reforms to reverse Orbán’s policies, which included judicial manipulation and media suppression. Celebrations erupted in Budapest, with many hopeful for a freer Hungary. QUESTION: How might Magyar’s leadership and proposed changes impact Hungary’s relationship with the rest of Europe?
