Human-built ‘beaver’ dams help save struggling streams

In the summer of 2025, the Beaver Brigade, a group of volunteers, worked to make Bernheim Forest in Kentucky more hospitable for beavers. Beavers are known as nature’s engineers because they build dams that create ponds, which help maintain healthy streams and ecosystems. The brigade assists by counting beavers, planting vegetation, and constructing beaver-dam analogs (BDAs) to encourage beaver habitation. These BDAs mimic natural dams and can improve stream habitats and water quality. Historically, beaver populations in North America were decimated due to the fur trade, but efforts like those of the Beaver Brigade aim to restore their numbers and the ecological benefits they bring. QUESTION: How might the restoration of beaver populations impact the environment and communities around Bernheim Forest?
