On patrol with Canadian forces securing the Arctic as global threats grow

Canadian army reservists and combat members recently completed a challenging two-month mission across the Arctic, marking the largest northern operation in the history of the Canadian Rangers. Covering 5,200km, they navigated harsh conditions, including blizzards and temperatures as low as -60C, while camping on ice and facing threats like polar bears and frostbite. This annual operation, involving 1,300 military personnel, aims to assert Canada’s military presence in the north, survey the land, and test Arctic survival skills. The mission has gained importance due to geopolitical tensions over Arctic resources, highlighted by US President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks about annexing Greenland. Despite these tensions, Canadian forces continue to collaborate with allies, including the US, UK, France, and Belgium, to strengthen Arctic defense capabilities. QUESTION: How might the changing climate and geopolitical interests in the Arctic impact future military operations in the region?
