You Should Be More Freaked Out by Shingles

Ann Garner, a retired pharmacy administrator from Wales, experienced the severe effects of shingles in 2024, challenging her initial belief that it was a mild illness. Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a viral infection causing a painful rash and potentially long-term nerve pain known as post-herpetic neuralgia. The condition is triggered by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. Garner’s case was exacerbated by stress, leading to a painful rash on her face and eye, despite treatment with antiviral medication. Public awareness of shingles’ severity is limited, as highlighted by a 2025 study from the University of Bristol, which found that many underestimate its impact until personally affected. This underscores the need for better public health messaging about the disease’s potential long-term effects. QUESTION: How might increased awareness and education about shingles change public perception and response to the disease?
