Bodycam video shows St. Louis police officer shooting teen in back of head

Body camera footage released by the St. Louis Police Department shows a police officer fatally shooting 17-year-old Emeshyon Wilkins in the back of the head as he fled, contradicting earlier claims that Wilkins had pointed a gun at officers. The video was obtained by Al Watkins, the family’s attorney, through a federal lawsuit after a year-long struggle to access it. Watkins criticized the police for their lack of transparency and integrity, emphasizing the need for responsible action during this vulnerable time in the U.S. Wilkins, who had no criminal history, was shot in June 2024 after a slow-speed chase involving a reportedly stolen SUV. The video shows the officer firing at Wilkins, who was unarmed at the time, as the gun found in his pocket was disassembled and incapable of being fired. Wilkins’ family continues to seek answers and justice for his death. QUESTION: How might increased transparency and accountability in law enforcement impact community trust and safety?
