Police kill woman accused of kidnapping, slashing child at Omaha Walmart

On April 14, 2026, Omaha police shot and killed a woman who had kidnapped a young boy from a Walmart and slashed him with a knife. The suspect, who had shoplifted the knife, approached a woman and her 2- or 3-year-old child inside the store, took the child at knifepoint, and led them outside. After a verbal exchange between the suspect and the child’s caretaker, police arrived in response to a 911 call. The suspect then began attacking the child, cutting his face and hand, which was captured on video. An officer shot the suspect, who died at the scene. The child was hospitalized with serious injuries but is expected to survive. The suspect’s motive remains unclear, and the incident is under investigation by local authorities. The event is considered isolated, and the store was mostly empty during the investigation. QUESTION: How might witnessing or experiencing such a traumatic event impact a young child, and what support systems could be put in place to help them recover?
