United CEO floated idea of United-American merger, sources say

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby proposed a merger with American Airlines to Trump administration officials, a move that has resurfaced following Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s openness to further consolidation in the aviation industry. However, such a merger would face challenges in proving it would enhance competition and not increase costs for passengers. Kirby has previously expressed the need for a strong American airline to compete globally, as foreign carriers dominate long-haul international flights to and from the U.S. Despite the potential benefits, regulators might be cautious about a merger that would control nearly half of the U.S. market. United is also considering acquiring JetBlue if market conditions necessitate a sale. Kirby sees high fuel prices as an opportunity for United to expand by acquiring assets. The Allied Pilots Association, representing American Airlines pilots, finds the merger idea intriguing due to concerns about American’s current performance. However, experts believe such a merger is unlikely. QUESTION: How might a merger between United Airlines and American Airlines impact the choices and prices available to travelers?
