Fifa blamed for $100 World Cup trains from New York

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has criticized Fifa for not subsidizing transportation costs for fans attending the World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium this summer. The New Jersey Transit plans to implement special event pricing, raising the cost of a train ticket from New York’s Penn Station to the stadium to over $100, a significant increase from the usual $12.90 fare. This decision affects all passengers, including children and seniors, as no concession prices are available. Sherrill argues that Fifa, which is expected to earn $11 billion from the event, should cover these costs instead of burdening taxpayers and commuters. Fifa responded, stating that they had adjusted their Host City Agreements to allow fans to travel “at cost” and had worked with host cities to secure federal funding for transportation. The World Cup will bring millions of fans to North America, with eight matches, including the final, scheduled at the New York/New Jersey Stadium. QUESTION: How might the increased transportation costs impact the overall experience for fans attending the World Cup matches?
