What we know about deaths, disappearances of staff at government labs

President Trump recently suggested that the disappearance or death of 10 government workers linked to nuclear or space technology might be more than coincidental. However, investigators involved in these cases, which span three years and include personnel from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory, see no connections. Social media has fueled theories of a plot against U.S. programs, but those close to the investigations believe personal tragedies are more likely. One notable case is the disappearance of retired Major General William Neil McCasland, last seen in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Despite online speculation about his past military roles, his wife doubts any connection to classified secrets. The FBI is not treating these incidents as a suspicious pattern, but the Department of Energy is monitoring the situation. The National Nuclear Security Administration is also aware of concerns about potential links among the cases. QUESTION: How might the spread of conspiracy theories on social media impact public perception of government investigations?
