Recovery efforts underway after reported tornado in Lena, Illinois

A tornado struck Lena, Illinois, causing significant damage as part of a large storm system moving toward Chicago. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Lena, and video footage captured the storm’s descent on the town. The Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office reported extensive damage, with trees and power lines down, making the town inaccessible. Fortunately, no deaths or serious injuries were reported. Sheriff Steve Stovall emphasized the focus on resident safety and recovery efforts. The Lena Police Department warned of another approaching storm and urged residents to take shelter and stay off the roads. Governor JB Pritzker assured state support through the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. Photos showed massive trees blocking roads, and residents described taking cover as tornado sirens blared and power was lost. The town remains shut down as officials prepare for more severe weather. QUESTION: How might communities better prepare for and respond to severe weather events like tornadoes to minimize damage and ensure safety?
