U.K. man pleads guilty to hacking scheme that stole $8 million

A 24-year-old man from Dundee, Scotland, named Tyler Robert Buchanan, has admitted in a U.S. federal court to leading a hacking operation that stole $8 million in virtual currency from victims across the United States. Buchanan pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. The scheme, which ran from September 2021 to April 2023, involved sending phishing messages to victims, tricking them into revealing personal information that allowed access to their virtual wallets. Buchanan and his accomplices targeted at least 45 companies in the U.S., Canada, India, and the U.K. He faces up to 22 years in prison, with sentencing set for August 21. His co-conspirators, Ahmed Hossam Eldin Elbadawy, Evans Onyeaka Osiebo, and Joel Martin Evans, still face charges. This case is part of a larger trend of cybercrime, with the FBI reporting that Americans lost nearly $21 billion to such crimes in 2025, particularly affecting those over 60. QUESTION: How might increasing awareness and education about phishing scams help reduce the number of victims in the future?
