Using the ocean to power data centers

The article discusses two pressing global issues: the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels and the high energy consumption of AI data centers. Garth Sheldon-Coulson, CEO of Panthalassa, proposes wave energy as a solution to both problems. Panthalassa’s Ocean-2 and Ocean-3 models are innovative wave energy converters that generate electricity by harnessing ocean waves. These floating systems, resembling large Roombas, are self-propelled and untethered, eliminating the need for cables or anchors. They function as sea-based data centers, processing AI tasks and transmitting results via satellite. Panthalassa’s approach offers a cleaner, faster, and more sustainable alternative to land-based data centers, with plans to deploy thousands of units offshore. The company is fully funded and expects the Ocean-3s to be operational by August. This initiative aims to provide a scalable and environmentally friendly energy solution to meet growing demands. QUESTION: How might the widespread adoption of wave energy technology impact the future of energy consumption and environmental sustainability?
