Data centers are expensive, unpopular — and could be a tipping point in the midterms

In 2024, Susan Bourgeois, the head of Louisiana Economic Development, was approached with a proposal from Meta to build a massive AI data center. Data centers, which house servers powering the internet and AI, bring significant investment to communities, especially in rural areas. However, their rapid expansion across the U.S. has sparked opposition due to environmental and economic concerns. Many communities are worried about the impact on local resources and costs, making it a key political issue. With limited federal and state regulations, local governments are left to manage the data center boom. This situation has been described as a “Wild West,” where local authorities are the primary decision-makers on these projects.
