Contract reveals fundraising deal for Trump’s East Wing overhaul

A newly disclosed agreement between the White House, the National Park Service, and the nonprofit Trust for the National Mall outlines the financing of a $400 million renovation of the White House East Wing. The document, obtained by Public Citizen, allows the Trust to collect donations to cover the project’s costs, with a fee structure that benefits the Trust. The agreement, signed in October 2025, ensures donor anonymity, with the White House identifying potential donors and referring them to the Trust. While foreign donations are prohibited, the Trust must verify that large donors do not have conflicts of interest with the Interior Department. However, donations from entities with other federal government dealings, like Amazon, are not restricted. This arrangement has sparked concerns about transparency and the influence of anonymous donations in government projects. QUESTION: How might the practice of accepting anonymous donations for government projects impact public trust and transparency in political processes?
