Leon Smith of Pennsylvania named 2026 National Teacher of the Year

Pennsylvania high school teacher Leon Smith has been named the 2026 National Teacher of the Year by the Council of Chief State School Officers’ National Teacher of the Year program. Smith, who teaches social studies at Haverford High School, expressed his gratitude for the honor, emphasizing the importance of representing teachers nationwide. Known for his engaging teaching style in AP U.S. history and AP African American studies, Smith was previously recognized as the 2025 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year. His students and colleagues describe him as passionate and caring, with a talent for making history relatable. Smith credits his first-grade teacher, Ms. Mason, for inspiring him to focus on how teachers make students feel. In addition to teaching, Smith coaches the freshman basketball team, where he is praised for making players feel valued. Basketball legend Julius Erving, Smith’s childhood hero, surprised him on “CBS Mornings” to congratulate him, sharing his own story of a teacher who made a lasting impact on his life. QUESTION: How might the recognition of teachers like Leon Smith influence the way society values the teaching profession?
