Iran attacks ships in Strait of Hormuz after Trump extends ceasefire

Iran has stated that it will only engage in peace talks with the United States when there is a “necessary and rational basis” to advance its national interests, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei. This announcement comes amid heightened tensions following attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, with the U.K. military and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard confirming two of the incidents. The U.K. military reported that an Iranian gunboat fired on a container ship near Oman, causing significant damage but no injuries. A second attack occurred near Iran’s coast, where a cargo ship was fired upon and stopped in the water. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed the vessels violated its blockade and endangered maritime safety. Meanwhile, an advisor to Iran’s parliamentary speaker criticized President Trump’s extension of a ceasefire as a tactic to prepare for a military strike against Iran. Trump extended the truce to allow Iran time to respond to his peace deal terms, hoping economic pressure would lead to compliance. QUESTION: How might the ongoing tensions between Iran and the U.S. impact global trade and international relations?
