NASA’s ‘Earthrise’ image changed how we see our planet. Can the Artemis moon missions do the same?

Two weeks ago, NASA’s Artemis II mission captured a breathtaking image of Earth, reminiscent of the famous “Earthrise” photo from the 1968 Apollo 8 mission. This new image shows Earth as a vibrant crescent against the dark backdrop of space, echoing the themes of connection and vulnerability that have long been associated with space exploration. The original “Earthrise” photo, along with the “Blue Marble” image from Apollo 17, profoundly impacted public perception of our planet, highlighting its beauty and fragility. These images inspired environmental movements, such as the first Earth Day in 1970, which focused on conservation and pollution issues. The Artemis II mission revives these narratives, reminding us of our shared responsibility to protect our planet. QUESTION: How might the renewed interest in space exploration influence environmental awareness and action among your generation?
