Pope visiting Equatorial Guinea prison in spotlight after US migrant deportations

Pope Leo XIV visited a notorious prison in Equatorial Guinea to highlight human rights abuses, continuing the tradition of Pope Francis. His visit aimed to give hope to prisoners and draw attention to issues like judicial abuses and overcrowding. This visit was part of Leo’s 11-day tour across Africa, which included a Mass in Mongomo and a prayer at a memorial for victims of a 2021 explosion in Bata. Equatorial Guinea’s justice system has been criticized for arbitrary killings, torture, and lack of judicial independence. The country, led by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo since 1979, has also been involved in controversial deals with the U.S. to accept deported migrants. Some of these migrants face detention and persecution. QUESTION: How might international attention from figures like the Pope influence human rights practices in countries like Equatorial Guinea?
