Wife of Army soldier to be released after being arrested by ICE

Deisy Rivera Ortega, the wife of Army Sgt. First Class Jose Serrano, is set to be released from federal custody after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Ortega, originally from El Salvador, was arrested on April 14 during an immigration appointment related to her application for Parole in Place, a program that protects military spouses from deportation. Despite living in the U.S. for ten years, Ortega was detained due to a 2019 deportation order following her conviction for illegal entry into the country. Although she was granted protection from deportation to El Salvador, there was a possibility she could be sent to a third country like Mexico, where she has no connections. Serrano, who has served in the Army for 27 years, expressed relief at the news of her release. CBS News has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for further comments on the situation. QUESTION: How might the experiences of military families like the Serranos influence future immigration policies?
