Meta to cut 8,000 jobs as it charges into AI

Meta is set to lay off approximately 8,000 employees, representing 10% of its workforce, as part of a cost-cutting strategy to enhance its focus on artificial intelligence (AI). The layoffs, beginning May 20, aim to improve efficiency and balance the company’s investments. This move aligns with a broader trend among U.S. companies, such as Pinterest and Dow, which are also reducing staff due to AI advancements. Tech giants are racing to expand their AI capabilities, often through building data centers or acquiring AI startups. Analyst Dan Ives suggests that Meta’s strategy involves using AI to automate tasks, streamline operations, and maintain productivity with fewer employees. Meta’s AI ambitions include developing “personal superintelligence,” which could surpass human intelligence and empower individuals. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has highlighted superintelligence as a tool for enhancing prosperity. QUESTION: How might the increasing reliance on AI in companies like Meta impact future job opportunities for your generation?
