Ex-police officer arrested in mass shooting plot: Investigators

Christopher Gillum, a former police officer from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was arrested in Destin, Florida, for allegedly planning a mass shooting at a festival in New Orleans. Authorities found a gun and nearly 200 rounds of ammunition in his hotel room. Gillum, who was wanted for making terroristic threats, had previously been recognized as Officer of the Month in June 2025 by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for his role in solving a robbery case. He had resigned from the Chapel Hill Police in 2019 and briefly returned as a non-sworn employee in 2024. The Louisiana State Police and the FBI are investigating, but there are no known direct threats to any festivals. Gillum is awaiting extradition to Louisiana. QUESTION: How might the actions of one individual impact the perception of safety at public events?
