US to allow firing squads, gas, and electrocution for federal executions

The US Department of Justice has announced that federal prisons will now have the option to use firing squads, gas asphyxiation, and electrocution for executions, in addition to lethal injection. This decision aims to strengthen the death penalty by deterring severe crimes and providing justice for victims. The previous administration had largely halted federal executions, with former President Joe Biden granting clemency to most federal death row inmates. However, President Donald Trump, a proponent of the death penalty, has reinstated its use for severe crimes, including those involving illegal immigrants killing law enforcement officers. The DOJ defends lethal injection as the preferred method but acknowledges challenges in obtaining the necessary drugs, prompting the expansion of execution methods. This move has sparked criticism, with some arguing it is cruel and discriminatory. Several states have already adopted alternative execution methods, such as firing squads and nitrogen gas. QUESTION: How might the expansion of execution methods impact public perception of the justice system in the United States?
