Arizona sues to block proposed ICE detention facility near site with chemicals

Arizona has filed a lawsuit against the federal government to prevent the establishment of a large Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility near a hazardous chemical site in Surprise, Arizona. Attorney General Kris Mayes argues that the Trump administration has ignored federal laws by not conducting necessary environmental reviews for the facility, which could detain up to 1,500 individuals. The lawsuit claims the facility violates the Immigration and Nationality Act, which requires suitable detention locations. An ICE spokesperson countered that the site was carefully evaluated to minimize environmental impacts and accused the lawsuit of being politically motivated. The federal government purchased the site for $70 million and plans to spend over $300 million on renovations, despite the warehouse’s original design for industrial use. The facility’s proximity to a chemical storage site raises safety concerns. Similar opposition has emerged in other cities, such as Atlanta, where local councils have opposed large-scale detention centers. QUESTION: How might the construction of detention facilities near hazardous sites impact local communities and the environment?
