Can electric air taxis carry passengers? Vertical Aerospace’s VX4 just cleared a key test

On April 14, 2026, a test pilot at Cotswold Airport in England successfully tested the VX4, an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developed by Vertical Aerospace. This aircraft, also known as an air taxi, demonstrated its ability to transition from flying like a helicopter to an airplane and back, a significant achievement in eVTOL development. Vertical Aerospace, founded in 2016, aims to certify the VX4 for commercial use, ensuring it meets safety standards for passengers. The company’s chief engineer, David King, who has extensive experience with tiltrotor aircraft, joined Vertical in 2023 to advance this technology. The successful test flight marks a step closer to launching a commercial air taxi service, highlighting the potential future of urban transportation. QUESTION: How might the development of air taxis like the VX4 change the way people travel in cities?
