Why emotional disturbance, a special ed category, is a double-edged sword for students

Walter, a 19-year-old student from St. Paul, Minnesota, has faced significant challenges throughout his education due to emotional and behavioral issues. From a young age, Walter exhibited aggressive behavior, which was exacerbated by a turbulent home life, including domestic violence and his mother’s accident that left her paraplegic. Walter’s story highlights the complexities of special education and the long-term effects of early labeling on students’ lives. QUESTION: How might the label of emotional or behavioral disorders impact a student’s self-esteem and future opportunities?
