Tycoon’s son offers home for “cocaine hippos” slated to be killed

Anant Ambani, son of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has proposed relocating the “cocaine hippos” in Colombia, descendants of those brought by drug lord Pablo Escobar, to his Vantara animal center in India. These hippos have become an invasive species in Colombia, causing environmental issues and posing threats to locals. Ambani has formally requested the Colombian government to halt plans to cull the animals and instead allow their safe translocation to Vantara, a large wildlife rescue and conservation center in Gujarat. The center already houses numerous animals, including elephants, tigers, and crocodiles. Ambani’s plan includes veterinary-led capture and transport, as well as creating a suitable habitat for the hippos. The cost of relocating the hippos is estimated at $3.5 million, but Ambani believes Vantara has the necessary resources and expertise to manage the task. QUESTION: How might relocating the hippos to India impact both the local ecosystem in Colombia and the environment at Vantara?
