Comey surrenders over charge of threatening Trump’s life in Instagram post

Former FBI Director James Comey turned himself in to authorities after being charged with allegedly threatening President Donald Trump’s life through an Instagram post. The controversy arose from an image Comey shared, featuring seashells arranged to read “86 47,” which prosecutors claim suggested violence against Trump, the 47th president. “Eighty-six” is slang for “get rid of,” but Comey insists he was unaware of this interpretation and argues the charges are politically motivated. This is the second time Comey, a vocal Trump critic, has faced criminal charges from the Justice Department. During a court appearance in Virginia, Comey’s lawyer argued the case was retaliatory. Attorney General Todd Blanche denied political motives, emphasizing the seriousness of threats against the president. The post, initially shared in May 2025, was deleted by Comey after realizing its potential implications. Legal experts and lawmakers have questioned the case’s strength, with each charge carrying a potential five-year prison sentence or a fine. QUESTION: How might the perception of political bias in legal proceedings impact public trust in the justice system?
