EU says Meta is failing to keep underage users off Facebook and Instagram

The European Union has accused Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, of not doing enough to prevent children under 13 from using its platforms, which goes against the EU’s strict digital rules designed to protect minors. The EU claims that Meta lacks effective measures to stop young children from signing up and fails to remove them once they have accounts. Meta, however, argues that it has systems in place to detect and remove underage users and is working on improving these measures. The EU’s Digital Services Act requires tech companies to enforce their own rules and protect users, including children. Meta now has the opportunity to respond to these findings before any final decision is made, which could result in significant fines. This issue highlights the ongoing challenge of ensuring online safety for young users. QUESTION: How might the enforcement of stricter age verification on social media platforms impact the way young people interact online?
