How a father and daughter duped NYC’s art world with fake Warhols and Banksys

A New York City art dealer, Robert Rogal, was approached by Karolina Bankowska, who claimed to have a family heirloom painting by Andrew Wyeth. Rogal accepted the painting, but later discovered it was a fake. Bankowska and her father, Erwin Bankowski, were involved in a scheme to sell counterfeit artworks, defrauding buyers of over $2 million. They pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud conspiracy and misrepresenting Native American-produced goods. The fakes, created in Poland, included works by artists like Banksy and Andy Warhol. The father and daughter face potential prison time, restitution, and deportation. The case highlights the prevalence of art forgery in the industry.
