Israel intercepts Gaza aid flotilla off Greek coast, activists say

Israeli forces intercepted 22 vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) near Crete, detaining around 175 activists attempting to break the maritime blockade of Gaza. The GSF accused Israel of piracy, claiming their boats were left stranded and powerless in the path of a storm after Israeli forces damaged them. Israel’s foreign ministry described the flotilla as a publicity stunt, while the GSF reported that 36 boats continue toward Gaza. This incident follows a history of similar interceptions, including one last October involving activist Greta Thunberg. The United Nations reports ongoing violence in Gaza, with significant civilian casualties and widespread displacement due to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The Red Cross states that 90% of Gaza’s population has been displaced, highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis in the region. QUESTION: How might international responses to such maritime interventions influence future humanitarian efforts in conflict zones?
