Oscars says AI actors, writing cannot win awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has updated its rules to ensure that only human-performed acting and human-authored writing are eligible for Oscars, amid the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in filmmaking. This change comes as AI technology increasingly replaces or replicates human work, such as the planned AI recreation of the late actor Val Kilmer for a lead role. The Academy’s new guidelines emphasize that AI tools used in filmmaking will neither help nor hinder a film’s chances of nomination, provided human creativity remains central. The Academy reserves the right to request more information about AI’s role in a film’s creation. This decision highlights ongoing debates about AI’s impact on creative industries, as seen in past Hollywood writers’ strikes and lawsuits against AI companies for copyright infringement. QUESTION: How might the Academy’s decision to limit Oscars to human-created work influence the future of AI in the film industry?
