Trump says he will hike tariffs on EU cars to 25%

Donald Trump has announced plans to increase tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25%. This decision comes after he accused the EU of not adhering to a previously agreed trade deal, although he did not specify the details of the alleged non-compliance. The current tariff rate, set at 15% last July, was part of a trade agreement negotiated at Trump’s Turnberry golf course in Scotland. This agreement had initially spared the EU from a potential 30% tariff hike. In return, the EU had committed to investing in the US and implementing changes to boost American exports. However, tensions have risen, particularly after Trump’s controversial interest in Greenland, leading the European Parliament to suspend the deal’s approval in January. The deal was eventually approved in March, but with a clause allowing suspension if the US undermines its objectives or engages in economic coercion. QUESTION: How might increasing tariffs on EU cars impact the relationship between the United States and the European Union in the long term?
