Airlines reduce, cap fares for Spirit travelers looking to rebook canceled flights

The Department of Transportation announced that most airlines are capping ticket prices for Spirit Airlines passengers needing to rebook canceled flights after Spirit began winding down operations due to stalled negotiations over a $500 million rescue deal. Airlines like United, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest are offering special fares for Spirit customers, requiring proof of a Spirit flight confirmation and payment. These offers are time-limited, with JetBlue and Southwest available for 72 hours, Delta for five days, and United for two weeks. United has capped most fares at $199, with exceptions for longer flights. American Airlines is also offering reduced fares and considering additional capacity on former Spirit routes. Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines are providing fare freezes and discounts, respectively. Additionally, airlines are supporting Spirit employees with travel benefits and job opportunities. QUESTION: How might the sudden shutdown of an airline like Spirit impact travelers and the airline industry as a whole?
