What to know about Spirit Airlines as it says it is ‘winding down all operations’

Spirit Airlines has announced an immediate wind-down of its operations amid uncertain negotiations with the federal government over a $500 million rescue deal. The airline’s final flight, from Detroit to Dallas, landed early Saturday morning. Spirit had flown over 50,000 passengers the previous day and is now working to return more than 1,300 crew members to their home bases. Many employees learned of the closure through media reports. All 277 scheduled flights for Saturday have been canceled, and customer service is no longer available. The airline expressed pride in its 34-year history but acknowledged the end of its operations. President Trump mentioned a possible announcement regarding the rescue deal, but no decision had been made. Other airlines are stepping in to assist stranded passengers, with some capping ticket prices for rebooked flights. QUESTION: How might the closure of Spirit Airlines impact travelers and the airline industry as a whole?
