Austria expels 3 Russian Embassy staff over suspected antenna spying in Vienna

Austria expelled three Russian diplomats suspected of using antennas on Russian diplomatic buildings to spy on international organizations in Vienna. These antennas allegedly intercepted data from agencies like the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Austria’s Foreign Minister, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, emphasized that espionage is a security threat and that diplomatic immunity should not be used for spying. Austria, which has been neutral in military conflicts, has recently taken a firmer stance against Russian espionage following the invasion of Ukraine. The Russian Embassy criticized Austria’s decision, warning of further strained relations. Austria is also working to strengthen its espionage laws to protect international organizations. QUESTION: How might the expulsion of diplomats impact Austria’s relationship with Russia and international diplomacy?
