Alberta separatists say they have enough signatures to trigger independence referendum

A petition for an independence referendum in Alberta has been submitted by the group Stay Free Alberta, which claims to have gathered over 300,000 signatures, surpassing the required 178,000. This move stems from a sense of western alienation, where some Albertans feel neglected by the federal government in Ottawa. However, the verification of signatures is currently on hold due to a legal challenge by indigenous First Nations, who argue that Alberta’s separation would infringe on their treaty rights. A court decision on this matter is expected soon. The Alberta government has amended laws to allow the petition process to continue, despite a previous court ruling that deemed an independence referendum unconstitutional. If the signatures are validated, a referendum could take place as early as October 19, asking Albertans if they want the province to become an independent state. This development highlights ongoing tensions over resource management and federal relations in the province. QUESTION: How might Alberta’s potential independence impact the relationship between the province and indigenous communities?
